Seasonal self-storage – switching out your summer wardrobe

summer-wardrobe

As the days draw shorter and the temperatures drop, it’s time to start thinking about moving your summer dresses, light jackets and sandals into storage, and giving your winter coats, hats, scarves and boots pride of place once again in your wardrobes.

This swap doesn’t need to be a painstaking process. Here, we explore how to easily prepare, pack and store your clothes to avoid them being damaged or lost along the way.

Prepare

Before you move your summer clothes into storage, it’s important to ensure that they’re clean and dry. Your clothes will be in the same condition when you collect them next year, so do future-you a favour and wash or dry clean your items before packing them. Any dirt or odours could stain or be more difficult to remove if left for a long period. Make sure they are completely dry before packing to avoid mildew.

Pack

How you pack your items is up to you, although choosing the most suitable option for your items will help save space, aid moving and avoid damage.

Vacuum packing is a great way to keep your clothes clean, dry and to maximise space in your unit. This is a better option if you’re looking to put your clothes away for shorter spells of time. It is unsuitable for some items, as certain fabrics are less suited to being confined, and could struggle to regain their shape once unpacked.

More delicate or bulky items, like designer jackets, shoes and dresses are less suited to vacuum packing, so consider using plastic containers or wardrobe boxes. Storing shoes in plastic containers, whether boxed or unboxed, will keep pairs together and help you avoid losing shoes at any point during your wardrobe swap! Choose airtight containers, which will protect your items further, particularly if you move in adverse weather.

Cardboard boxes are great for storing the lighter summer items that would otherwise clutter up your space during the winter months. Swimwear, sunglasses, shorts and flats can all be put out of the way until next year, when you can spend some time rummaging through last year’s choices to ascertain whether you would still wear them!
