While many people start up a home business to build a full-time income, some just want to generate a little extra cash. Rather than getting a second job to earn a little extra money for a rainy day, it’s now possible to make money from the comfort of your own home. Here are some ways in which you can increase your income without stepping out of your front door!
Rent out your spare room
If you have children who have moved away to university, moved out for good, or you just have a spare room, you may have a space that is sitting around empty and being used as a storage room and nothing more. Why not store the boxes in a self-storage unit and offer the room out to a lodger instead?
There are a number of different websites available to help you find a lodger to move into your spare room, such as SpareRoom, but you can also find a lodger through mutual contacts such as friends or colleagues. Many potential lodgers are often looking for a room to rent near work during the week before going home at the weekend so you’ll still be able to keep your privacy at the weekend.
You can set the rental costs, decide how much the lodger will contribute to bills etc. and also work out whether food will be provided for them. If you’re offering the room to students as well, you may have to consider offering breakfast or dinner.
With this arrangement, you’ll be able to make some money renting a room you don’t use and possibly make a friend in the process.
Become a freelancer
As long as your freelancing doesn’t interfere with a job you’re already doing, one way to make money from home could be to offer your professional services as either a translator, content writer, transcriber, or website developer – for example – to companies around the country or even the world.
You’ll need to build your portfolio up, since the reputation you gain will be based on the standard of work you deliver compared to what you said you could do, and also make sure you create a good network of clients. Freelance work, unless you find a company who consistently asks you to do work for them, can be a little less consistent so it’s good to work with a number of different companies.
Set up a home or eCommerce business
Making money from home couldn’t be simpler when you’re doing something you love. If you have a practical skill, such as card making, jewellery making, floristry, photography, sewing or something similar, you could set up a business from home and sell your wares either locally or online.
With a business based from home, you can start building a community by offering your services to friends, family and acquaintances and then move out into the wider market once you know you’ve got products or services that people are looking for.
If you don’t have space at home, why not set up a home office from a storage unit? That way you have a fully designated space for your crafts or storage for your products and it doesn’t have to invade your home.

Offer pet sitting services
If you already have pets, or have had pets in the past, then pet sitting might be the job from home for you. Many people have pets that they can’t look after sometimes due to work commitments or going on holiday so, by providing your home, you could give them the assurance that their furry friend is getting looked after while they’re absent.
You may have to specify which animals you feel comfortable taking care of – if you’ve had dogs before, you may not mind adding a couple more leashes to your daily walks, but if you’ve only ever looked after cats, a snake or lizard may be a little out of your comfort zone.
Like the other suggestions, the best way to get ahead with this business is to build up a community with people you know, or friends of friends who have pets and can recommend you and grow from there.
There are a whole host of other possibilities available for you to make money from home, from antiques or collectables dealing to becoming a doula, but we hope we’ve given you some inspiration on how you could fill your time and profit doing something you enjoy.
